What is Sustainable Web Design? sustainablewebdesign.org

As we click away on our screens and devices, it’s easily forgotten all this consumes natural resources - directly or indirectly:

Bloated websites lead to slow load times, frustrated users and wasted energy.

This microsite lists four aspects of sustainable web design and links to a few interesting resources:

  • Findability
  • Performance optimisation
  • Design & user experience
  • Hosting

Long story short: just as with designing for an accessible web, designing for a sustainable web goes hand-in-hand with better user experience: shorter loading times, better performance, simpler concepts. It’s a no-brainer, really.

(On the same topic, this chapter from the O’Reilly book on sustainable web design is also a good primer.)

I'm Sebastian, Sociologist and Interaction Designer. This journal is mostly about bringing together social science and design for inclusive, privacy-focused, and sustainable "human-first" digital strategies. I also tend to a "digital garden" with carefully curated resources.

My occasionally sent email newsletter has all of the above, and there is of course also an RSS feed or my Mastodon/Fediverse profile.
